Porsche 993 Carrera S | Glacier White(3AU)

Porsche 993 Carrera S | Glacier White(3AU)

■ Firnweiß

Firnweiß

■ Grand Prix White

Firnweiß

Firnweiß — Another Shade of White in the Air-Cooled Porsche 993

Porsche 993 Carrera S | Glacier White(3AU)

Every shade of Porsche white has its own history.

Throughout the history of the Porsche 911, various shades of white have appeared, each reflecting the design and character of its era.

Among them is Firnweiß, known in English as Glacier White, a factory color offered during the later years of the air-cooled Porsche 993.

Recorded under Porsche paint codes 3AU and 3AT, Firnweiß is a solid white finish with a distinctive name inspired by nature.

Through a 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera S, we take a closer look at the history and character of this understated color.

■ The Meaning Behind Firnweiß

The name Firnweiß originates from two German words.

“Firn” refers to old snow that has gradually become compacted and granular through the passage of time.

“Weiß” simply means white.

Together, the words evoke the appearance of aged snow and the natural formation of glaciers.

Porsche has long used names inspired by landscapes, nature, and distinctive visual impressions for its exterior colors.

Firnweiß is a particularly elegant example of this tradition.

■ Different from Grand Prix White

For many Porsche enthusiasts, Grand Prix White is one of the most recognizable colors associated with the classic 911.

However, Firnweiß is a separate factory color.

Grand Prix White is associated with paint codes such as 908 and 92R, while Firnweiß is identified by codes 3AT and 3AU.

Unlike metallic or pearl finishes, Firnweiß is a solid white.

Rather than relying on metallic reflections, it allows the bodywork itself to define the visual character of the car.

On the Porsche 993, this simplicity complements the rounded front fenders, flowing roofline, and sculpted rear bodywork.

Although both colors may appear similar at first glance, their distinct factory paint codes reflect different original finishes.

For collectors and enthusiasts, these details are an important part of understanding a classic Porsche.

■ Firnweiß and the 1997 Porsche 993

The Porsche 993 represents the final generation of the air-cooled 911.

Introduced for the 1997 model year, the Carrera S combined the naturally aspirated 3.6-liter flat-six engine with the wider bodywork associated with the 911 Turbo.

Its rear-wheel-drive layout and naturally aspirated engine preserved the traditional character of the 911.

The 1997 Carrera S featured here is finished in Firnweiß.

Porsche’s period color documentation lists Glacier White among the available standard exterior colors for the 1997 model year.

On the Carrera S, the restrained white finish emphasizes the distinctive wide rear fenders and the carefully shaped surfaces of the 993 body.

It is a combination that demonstrates how a simple color can reveal the character of a car’s design.

■ Paint Codes and Originality

For a classic Porsche, the exterior color represents more than appearance alone.

The original factory specification, the condition of the existing paintwork, and the vehicle’s documented history all contribute to an understanding of its authenticity.

On the Porsche 993, the original paint code can often be identified through the factory paint label or vehicle identification sticker.

For Firnweiß, the relevant codes include 3AU and 3AT.

Porsche’s historical paint documentation distinguishes these codes according to the paint system used.

However, identifying the correct factory color does not necessarily confirm that all existing paintwork is original.

A proper assessment may also involve paint thickness measurements, examination of individual panels, and a review of previous repair or restoration records.

Preserving the original specification is often an important consideration when maintaining a classic Porsche.

■ The Value of Preserving History

The appeal of a classic Porsche is not defined solely by rarity, performance, or special equipment.

The original exterior color, the factory specification, and the history accumulated over decades all contribute to the identity of an individual car.

Firnweiß was not necessarily a special-order color.

Its significance lies in its place within Porsche’s original color palette and in the condition and authenticity of each surviving example.

At PORTECH, we believe that understanding these details is an essential part of caring for classic Porsche vehicles.

Mechanical condition is important, but so is respecting the history and original character of the car.

At first glance, it is simply white.

Yet behind that simplicity lies another small chapter in the history of the air-cooled Porsche 911.

PORTECH provides maintenance, repair, and restoration services for a wide range of Porsche models, including the 911, 356, 914, 924, 928, 944, and 968.

We also welcome inquiries regarding vehicles purchased elsewhere and privately imported Porsche vehicles.
