BEFORE WE REBUILD.

Porsche
PORTECH
BEFORE WE REBUILD.
An engine is removed from a Porsche.
Ancillaries come off.
Cylinder heads are removed.
Then cylinders, pistons and eventually the crankcase.
The beginning of an engine overhaul.
But at PORTECH, an engine problem does not automatically mean a complete rebuild.
An overhaul is one method of engine repair.
The more important questions come first:
Does the engine really need to be taken apart this far?
And if it does,
what should be inspected, measured, repaired or replaced — and according to what standard?
That is where engine work at PORTECH begins.
■ A COMPLETE OVERHAUL IS NOT ALWAYS THE ANSWER.
An oil leak.
An unfamiliar noise.
An unstable idle.
Increased oil consumption.
Or simply an engine that no longer feels the way it once did.
A classic Porsche can develop many different symptoms over the decades.
But not every symptom requires a complete engine overhaul.
Ignition?
Fuel delivery?
Intake or exhaust?
Oil system?
Ancillary components?
Or is the cause actually inside the engine?
We begin by understanding the symptoms and investigating the cause.
If a limited repair can correctly resolve the problem,
there is no reason to dismantle an engine further than necessary.
If internal wear or damage means that a partial repair can no longer restore the engine correctly,
then the engine should come out and be properly disassembled.
The objective is not to perform an overhaul.
The objective is to carry out the repair that the Porsche actually needs.
■ THE INFORMATION BEHIND THE WORK.
Taking an engine apart is only the beginning of an overhaul.
The important work comes next.
What needs to be measured?
Which specifications should be used?
What is within tolerance?
What can be reused?
What can be restored?
And what should be replaced?
At PORTECH, we are able to refer to period workshop manuals and technical documentation.
These materials provide specifications, clearances, tightening procedures, adjustment methods and inspection procedures relevant to the Porsche of that era.
When working on an engine built decades ago,
we believe it is important not to rely solely on modern assumptions.
We go back to the technical information from the period in which that Porsche was engineered.
■ THE RIGHT TOOLS HAVE A PURPOSE.
Porsche developed special tools for specific workshop procedures.
Some work can be performed with conventional equipment.
Other procedures require tools designed for a particular purpose.
To hold a component correctly.
To measure accurately.
To assemble it correctly.
And to avoid damaging the parts being worked on.
When Porsche specified a special tool,
there was a reason for it.
Workshop manuals.
Technical documentation.
Factory specifications.
The appropriate special tools.
And finally,
the actual condition and measurements of the components in front of us.
Experience alone is not enough.
Documentation alone is not enough.
We use both.
■ A REBUILD DOES NOT MEAN REPLACING EVERYTHING.
A complete overhaul may sound as though every component inside the engine should be replaced with a new one.
That is not how we approach it.
Disassemble.
Clean.
Measure.
Inspect.
Then decide.
Components that remain capable of performing correctly can be retained.
Components that can be properly restored can be restored.
And components that can no longer provide the required function or reliability should be replaced.
We do not replace something simply because it is old.
And we do not retain something simply because it is original.
Every decision should have a reason behind it.
■ NOT ONLY MAJOR REPAIRS.
A photograph like this may give the impression that PORTECH is a place only for major work such as complete engine overhauls.
Engine overhaul enquiries are certainly welcome.
But that is only part of what we do.
Oil changes.
Oil leaks.
Unfamiliar noises.
Ignition problems.
Engine adjustment.
Routine inspections.
Brakes and suspension.
Electrical issues.
Or simply:
“My Porsche feels a little different lately.”
Sometimes, identifying a problem early is precisely what prevents a small repair from becoming a complete overhaul.
You do not need to contact us already knowing what repair your Porsche requires.
■ FIRST, WE DIAGNOSE.
Should the engine be opened?
Or should it remain together?
Making that decision correctly is also part of the work.
And when an engine does need to be opened,
we refer to period workshop manuals and technical documentation,
check the relevant specifications,
use the appropriate special tools,
measure the components,
and make each decision for a reason.
PORTECH continues to welcome enquiries for engine overhauls, maintenance and repairs.
Major work or a small concern.
We begin by understanding the Porsche in front of us.
Opening the engine is not the answer.
Making the right decision is where the repair begins.
